Growing a Variegated Monstera (Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana 'Albo Variegata') from a cutting can be a rewarding experience, but it does require some patience and care. Here's how you can propagate a Variegated Monstera from a cutting:
-
Find a healthy stem: Select a stem with at least one leaf node, which is the point where the leaf attaches to the stem. Choose a stem with a few leaves and healthy growth.
-
Cut the stem: Use a clean, sharp knife or scissors to make a clean cut below the leaf node. Make sure the stem is at least 6-8 inches long.
-
Remove the lower leaves: Carefully remove the lower leaves from the stem, leaving only the top 2-3 leaves. This will allow the cutting to focus its energy on producing new roots.
-
Plant the cutting: Plant the cutting in a small pot with well-draining soil. You can use a mix of perlite and peat moss, or a commercial potting mix. Firmly press the soil around the stem to ensure good contact with the soil.
-
Water the cutting: Water the cutting thoroughly, making sure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
-
Provide warmth and humidity: The cutting needs warmth and humidity to grow new roots. You can cover the pot with a plastic bag or place it in a clear container to create a mini greenhouse. Place the cutting in a warm, bright area, but avoid direct sunlight.
-
Wait for roots to grow: Be patient and allow the cutting to grow new roots. This can take several weeks or even a few months. Keep the soil moist and provide humidity as needed.
-
Transplant the cutting: Once the cutting has grown a good root system, you can transplant it into a larger pot with well-draining soil. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. Water the plant regularly and fertilize it every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
With proper care and patience, your Variegated Monstera cutting will grow into a beautiful, full-grown plant.
